The “CSOs’ Legal Health Check” project, carried out by Pro Bono Italia ETS in collaboration with PILnet – Public Interest Law Network and funded by Civitates – The European Democracy Fund, is an initiative designed to strengthen the legal and organizational resilience of selected non-profit organizations (civil society organizations, or “CSOs”) operating in Italy.
It consists of a review of the organization and its internal governance aimed at identifying areas of risk and addressing them accordingly, including from a preventive perspective.
This legal and tax-related activity is provided free of charge by a team of lawyers and in-house legal professionals from our network. It is intended to support CSOs selected on a first come, first served basis through a guided process of analysis and strengthening of their internal structure, although it does not amount to tailored legal assistance. Should specific issues emerge, CSOs will be able to request pro bono legal assistance by submitting a dedicated application through the Pro Bono Italia Platform.
In conclusion, participation in the Project represents an opportunity for all CSOs to:
- increase awareness of legal and regulatory risks;
- strengthen internal procedures and compliance practices;
- prevent issues that could affect institutional activities; and
- access qualified pro bono legal and tax support.
In an increasingly complex regulatory and operational environment, having verification and prevention tools in place means protecting the organization’s work and maximizing the social impact that the CSO seeks to generate in the community in which it operates.
Integrated compliance and the adequacy of the organizational structure – including for Third Sector Organizations – are no longer merely a best practice, but a real necessity: not only to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, but also to meet the growing value-based expectations of the business world, civil society, and the institutions that support and sustain the activities of CSOs.
